Something’s been missing and I just found it!

In the honeymoon phase of the journey everything seems easy, joyful and filled with positive results. We are so proud of ourselves. Eventually, the journey stops being easy. The daily tasks of weighing, measuring, tracking and limiting portion sizes becomes irksome. Overtime, the journey becomes filled with hard days, slips, binges and continuous restarts.

Wild Child’s been restricted from eating many of her favorite things and forbidden from overeating. Eating no longer feels satisfying to her. The journey itself stoped providing enough joy and pleasure for Wild Child to be happy. She gets down right grumpy and grasps any opportunity to eat to her satisfaction. That begins to upset the inner balance with Dictator. The struggle for control begins. The struggle disrupts weigh loss and I begin to feel out of control. At that point, no one feels happy. This is where I have struggled and quit.

Reading blogs has revealed something my journey has been missing. Something, that could keep Wild Child from being so unhappy. Wild Child finds happiness in eating fatty, salty, sweet foods, overeating.  She enjoys being entertained, having good times and playing. She likes all the fun things little girls like to do. Wild Child needs me to intentionally provide other non-food fun, and pleasurable activities to keep her happy. She’d like me to tell her that it’s okay to enjoy these things to the fullest.

Searching your blogs and SP, I found lots of FUN! Activities that will keep Wild Child happy.

Listening to upbeat music like Mozart Mania while doing household chores or yardwork is fun.

Maybe a creative hobby would be fun. Buy, borrow or rent equipment so you can enjoy outdoor fun activities like swimming, rollerblading, walking, Frisbee golf, riding bikes, skiing, golf, boating. Go for a walk in a neighborhood away from your home to view new scenery, architecture or landscapes so walking is more interesting. Exercise snacks could be more fun if you purchased inexpensive items like hula hoops, jump ropes, resistance bands and dumbbells. When you’re up to more strenuous activity we can try rock climbing! Wow, that would be fun. Thinking about a fun, active life makes us all feel better.

I started by committing to saying Grace and then intentionally pointing out all the fatty, salty, sweet items on my plate. Now I’m committing myself to go and find some fun things to do that will keep the journey happy.

  2. Excellent advice, and rings true... reward that Wild Child with things OTHER than food, and everybody will be happier. Nice list of YouTube choices.

  3. Agree with the previous comments - that’s a great list of non-food entertainments and distractions, to keep my Inner Toddler amused.

I’ve also found that my Inner Toddler yells less, when I take the time to slow down, and just BE, in the present. Watch a snail crawling along a leaf. Find patterns in the clouds. Stroke one of my cats with my eyes closed, trying to see if I can feel individual fur hairs. Something about calming the “noise” seems to help my Inner Toddler chill out and relax. 🕉
